EDUCATION IS THE WAY TO NAVIGATE LIFE
Rev Sullivan was a civil rights activist and minister in Philadelphia who believed that jobs were key to improving the lives of African Americans. He organized a campaign called "Selective Patronage" to encourage people to boycott businesses that didn't hire Black people. His theology ,activism and advocacy span across the world.
The Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust "LSHCT" was founded in 1966 as the Zion Non-Profit Charitable Trust. The Trust acts as a resource of opportunities that encourage a sense of self-help to guide social and economic empowerment for all. The Trust is a source of pride for the Progress Movement.
The Sullivan Airport Arrivals Hall Exhibition initiative was created and started by Mr. Ronald Howard. His implementation of school trips in partnership with the LHSCT to the AAH Sullivan Exhibition fostered learning around a local leader and global icon. With the intent to enrich the lives of future leaders. Through exposure, education, and art centered activities around the life and legacy of Rev Sullivan. VUOTS, took leadership of this project in partnership with the LHSCT. Seeking to continue the PROGRESS MOVEMENT by encouraging youth to learn, share and uplift the change enacted by Rev. Sullivan globally.

The overall initiative included two high schools and four middle schools. All the of students were informed on the location and purpose of the trip prior to their visit.
The overall initiative focused on middle & high school youth living and attending school in Philadelphia.
This initiative was Inspired after the Sullivan Centennial celebration and Airport dedication. Mr. Ronald Howard launched this initiative under the umbrella of the Manayunk-Roxborough Art Centre (MRAC) in partnership with Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust, VUOTS continued this initiative until the end of the Philadelphia PA School District 2023-24 school year. VUOTS objective for this initiative was to,serve as a catalyst for expanding the initiative on a broader scale to more Philadelphia Public School District students, and beyond. More importantly that the teachings of Reverend Dr. Leon H. Sullivan continue to shape generations of underserved communities, local and abroad.
The data suggest that this was a successful initiative. The data reflects that student participation in this pilot increased their knowledge and awareness of Rev. Dr. Sullivan. The data reports that students from all schools understood the lessons objectives.
This initiative reconnected the participating students with a local Civil Rights Leader and his legacy. This initiative and its purpose are needed to break the barriers of miseducation and ignorance that plaque urban schools such as those in Philadelphia PA. This pilot also exposed the lack of local BLACK History education taught in Philadelphia Schools. Meanwhile creating a new road for teachers and students to explore and make local history and local minority history a intricate part of Philadelphia's history curriculum.
